Hi everybody,

Are you interested to know why some of the people, buildings or even the MRT stations are named as Raffles? And the Raffles’s history. Read on my text below and you could find out more.

Why people named their child raffles?

Some of the parents wish their children will be walking on the same path as Raffles. It means that they will as bright as him, will be a famous person as him when their children grows up and set up prospering business to be a good and well-known business man or woman.

Why the government wants to name one of the MRT station and some of the buildings in Singapore as Raffles name?

The reason is very simple. They wanted to commemorate Raffles who had made Singapore from a deserted place to a modern country. What a Singapore hero.

The Raffles history

Raffles had founded Singapore on 19 January; 1819.He had started to do business in Singapore as he thought that Singapore had a very good location in the world. It lays in the middle of the equator line, had a deep blue seas surrounded where most of the business man could easily find a place to park them. So, he had started to do the business there. He started to think of a way to attract the others businessmen from other country to start the business here by starting a new rule on: The port in Singapore was free of charge! That was really works. So there was more and more business in Singapore. He died on 5 July 1826 in Barvet, England.

Raffles hobby

Stamford Raffles was deeply fascinated by the immense diversity of strange animals and plants of the East Indies during his tenure there. He soon employed zoologists and botanists to discover all they can about the animals and plants of the region and would pay his assistants out of his own pockets to collect specimens. He also revived and became the president of the Batavian Society, which was actively engaged in the study of natural history of Java and adjacent areas. Sir Thomas Stamford Raffles passed away a day before his 45th birthday in 1826. A few years earlier, in 1821 and 1822, he contributed two papers in the Transactions of the Zoological Society, London, with descriptions of some 34 species of birds and 13 species of mammals, chiefly from Sumatra. Most of the new species he named are valid today, and these animals will continue to remind us of the contributions he has made. Animals named by Raffles himself include.

My Thoughts

So I think that Sir Stamford Raffles is a hero to Singapore. If he did not pass by Singapore, I think that there will not be not have any modern Singapore now in the map and there will be tourist coming to Singapore. Therefore, I think that sir Stamford Raffles is very important to Singapore!
